WELCOME to the Gambaru Adversity Awards

When Mike Pywell a Harrogate based Life and Business Coach met Jonathan Walker in January 2013 it was a day that changed both their lives. Both obsessed with helping others be the ‘be the best they can be’ they took Gambaru to the next level… but their greatest legacy is the Gambaru Adversity Awards.

The charity’s objective is find young people who have ‘kept going’ when it was easier ‘to give up’. Faced with adversity – social, physical, mental health or learning difficulties – each of our winners have used sport to overcome what life has thrown at them.

It’s tough starting anything from scratch but spurred on by the quality of the nominees how could we not deliver? Like our award winners we’ve turned setbacks into opportunities and at the end of our third year we’ve hit our five year target of 100 Adversity Awards

Each year has a highlights video, we have video stories, narrative and photographs that capture the emotion and celebration of the evening.

About Gambaru

Gambaru is Harrogate’s leading independent gym, but to most of our members we are more than that….

If work and home are the first and second place everyone needs a third. It’s where you feel at home, without being at home. Third places may be a coffee shop, the golf club, the church hall or a pub, or – sadly to those with heavy schedules – behind the wheel on a motorway or a leather clad seat on a 36 bus, music courtesy of Spotify.

So what about you, do you have a ‘third place’? And if so has life thrust it upon you or is it yours through choice? Does your third place inspire you? Does it encourage you to stretch the boundaries? When you’ve been there do you come out feeling better? Is your ‘third place’ a habit you feel good about?

So why not give Gambaru a try? Whether getting fit, keeping fit or leading the field is your aim, working out at Gambaru is a great habit to have. We’ve members who’ve been here 20 years but many more have joined in the last year and some in the last few days. We are all on a journey, why not join us? We’ll make you welcome and if you’re ‘24 hour’ we’ll give you keys to the door. Not a bad start for a new ‘third place.’
