WELCOME to the Gambaru Adversity Awards

When Mike Pywell a Harrogate based Life and Business Coach met Jonathan Walker in January 2013 it was a day that changed both their lives. With joint passions focused on helping others be the best they can be, they’ve taken Gambaru to the next level but their greatest legacy is the Gambaru Adversity Awards.

Our objective was to find young people who have ‘kept going’ when it was easier ‘to give up’. Faced with adversity – social, physical, mental health or learning difficulties – each of our winners have used sport to overcome what life has thrown at them. Their journeys are unique, and they’ve all found the grit you only discover when you move from ‘victim to survivor’. We salute each one of them and this programme is a tribute to their fortitude.

It’s challenging starting anything from scratch but spurred on by the quality of the nominees how could we not deliver? Like our award winners we’ve focused on turning setbacks into opportunities – none more so than the one that led us to Rachael and Simon at Sira Studios. Despite demanding schedules they have consistently produced the superb videos that grace our Awards Evenings and this site.

Watch the awards evening as it happened.

We have a highlights video of each year which gives a flavour of the awards and the full length video which captures the emotion and celebration of the evening. This includes the ten short films shown on the night, which movingly illustrate the incredible achievements our winners have made.

After two great years at the Old Swan Hotel, this year we are moving to our new home, the wonderful Aire Room at Harrogate Pavilions.  We are also for the first time expanding to include primary schools, and nominations are welcome for 10 and 11 year old children. The event starts at 7.00pm for 7.30pm , it will be a stunning evening, don’t miss it and bring your tissues!

Tickets are nominally priced, they are free to nominees, £2 for nominees families and friends, £3 for school staff and coaches etc and £6 for guests.

Please book tickets early, they are available at Eventbrite the shortcut to the page is tinyurl.com/adversityawards

APPLY FOR 2017

We are looking for young people 14-18, and for the first time this year 10 to 11, who have used sport to overcome adversity. Everyone nominated will receive a certificate and the winners will receive an award, presented at the awards evening at The Pavillions on the 6th December.

The adversity can be physical, social or due to learning difficulties and the level of sporting achievement is not as important as their personal journey. The application process is very simple, click either the ‘nominate senior’ (14-18) or ‘nominate junior’ (10-11) below.

About Gambaru

Gambaru is Harrogate’s leading independent gym, but to most of our members we are more than that….

If work and home are the first and second place everyone needs a third. It’s where you feel at home, without being at home. Third places may be a coffee shop, the golf club, the church hall or a pub, or – sadly to those with heavy schedules – behind the wheel on a motorway or a leather clad seat on a 36 bus, music courtesy of Spotify.

So what about you, do you have a ‘third place’? And if so has life thrust it upon you or is it yours through choice? Does your third place inspire you? Does it encourage you to stretch the boundaries? When you’ve been there do you come out feeling better? Is your ‘third place’ a habit you feel good about?

So why not give Gambaru a try? Whether getting fit, keeping fit or leading the field is your aim, working out at Gambaru is a great habit to have. We’ve members who’ve been here 20 years but many more have joined in the last year and some in the last few days. We are all on a journey, why not join us? We’ll make you welcome and if you’re ‘24 hour’ we’ll give you keys to the door. Not a bad start for a new ‘third place.’

Sponsorship & Support

Gambaru Fitness are proud to launch these awards but as an independant business our resources are limited. We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in supporting the programme.

We are currently in talks with North Yorkshire Sport about bringing the awards under their charitable umbrella – we hope to have that agreed within the next few weeks.

In the meantime please get in contact,
we are very keen to find supportive partners who share our vision.
